From the Lab

Finished by hand in San Francisco.

Made by fifth-generation European manufacturers. Inspected, assembled, finished, engraved, and packed here.

Why I do this

For thirty years I made homegoods. Somewhere in there I lost the thread. I was designing for accounts I couldn't picture, for a shopper I never met. Factories the size of airfields. Tradeshows where everything blurred into everything else. All of it mass-produced. None of it really mine. The part I loved, the actual making, had gone quiet. By the end I'd started to reject the whole thing.

So I stopped.

Murmmr is what came after, and it's the opposite of all that. One object at a time, made as well as a thing can be made. I wanted to know what that actually takes. So I went looking.

What I found still surprises me. The right crystal doesn't clink, it rings. Only a handful of houses in Europe still pour it that way. A dome and a base, closed into a single sealed sphere, so tight you smell nothing until you lift it. Almost no one on earth can make that. And there's one facility on the continent that will coat a dome in 24k gold at the precision I wanted. Every piece has taught me something I had no business knowing a few years back.

None of it scales. That's the point. No corner cut, no account to please, nobody to answer to but the object itself. Small enough that I know every piece that leaves the door. And, finally, who it's for. Built to be kept, not replaced.

Turns out I don't need to build big, I need to build right.

Every piece is inspected for flaws before engraving, numbering, and final assembly.

The brasswork is polished until it holds the light.

A single coat of hardwax oil, worked into the charred wood and left to cure.

The Proof of Originality is written, numbered, and torn, then matched to your Object.

The Journal
